Arizona rookie Carson Beck delivered the kind of poised, productive preseason performance that can change the tone of a quarterback competition. His showing in Canton was encouraging, but it did not settle the Cardinals’ plans under center.
Carson Beck was among the winners and Jacoby Brissett among the losers after the Hall of Fame Game in Canton, Ohio, on Aug. 6, 2026. The Carolina Panthers defeated the Arizona Cardinals 33-30, but the larger Arizona question was whether Beck’s strong performance has already put him ahead of Brissett in the quarterback competition.
Beck’s answer was emphatic enough to matter: the rookie completed 15 of 19 passes for 188 yards, one touchdown and a 125.4 passer rating. It was only an exhibition opener, yet it gave the Cardinals a compelling early look at a quarterback who appeared composed, accurate and willing to attack downfield.
Beck made the most of it
Preseason statistics require context, particularly in the Hall of Fame Game. Starters often play limited snaps, game plans are intentionally basic, and much of the action comes against players fighting for roster spots.
Still, Beck did what a young quarterback needs to do in that setting. He moved Arizona to 17 first-half points and continued playing into the second half, showing enough command to turn a national exhibition game into a meaningful audition.
The standout moment was a 49-yard deep completion to Jalen Brooks. Big throws alone do not decide quarterback jobs, but that play supported the broader impression: Beck was not merely checking the ball down and surviving his first unofficial NFL appearance.
At 24, the third-round pick arrived with a chance to develop behind a veteran. His first showing suggested he could force a faster timetable than expected if that poise carries into the rest of camp and the remaining preseason games.
Why Brissett is under pressure
Calling Brissett a Hall of Fame Game “loser” does not mean the veteran has lost the job. A quarterback competition cannot reasonably be decided by one August exhibition, especially when the players may not receive the same supporting cast, play calls or number of snaps.
But the dynamic has changed. Beck now has a tangible performance Arizona can point to when dividing practice reps and determining who gets opportunities against stronger competition later this month.
Brissett’s advantage is experience. He has navigated NFL defenses, managed regular-season pressure and understands the weekly demands that come with running a professional offense. Those traits matter far more once the games count.
The rookie’s advantage is possibility. If Beck continues to deliver accurate throws, avoid preventable mistakes and generate explosive plays, the Cardinals will have to weigh the value of veteran stability against the upside of finding a longer-term answer.
A 33-30 game with limits
The Panthers’ 33-30 victory was entertaining by preseason standards, but neither club should draw sweeping conclusions from the score. The Hall of Fame Game is the ceremonial opening of the NFL preseason, not a full test of a roster’s September readiness.
Arizona played its first game under rookie head coach Mike LaFleur, whose team looked crisp in the early stages despite the eventual loss. For a new staff, the early exhibition schedule is as much about organization, communication and situational execution as it is about wins.
Carolina also received useful quarterback work. Kenny Pickett completed eight of 11 passes for 62 yards during a brief debut that ended with a touchdown drive, while rookie Haynes King threw for 180 yards and multiple touchdowns in relief.
That distribution illustrates why preseason quarterback evaluations can be tricky. A clean stat line is valuable, but coaches also study decisions at the line of scrimmage, command in the huddle, protection adjustments and how a player responds after an unfavorable play.
The winners went beyond quarterbacks
Beck was the most consequential individual winner because quarterbacks reshape entire teams’ seasons. Yet the night also offered encouraging moments for several people and groups connected to the game.
- Mike LaFleur: Arizona’s new head coach saw his team begin its preseason with a functional offensive showing and a memorable debut for his rookie quarterback.
- Carolina’s quarterback room: Pickett exited healthy after an efficient appearance, while King supplied the passing production that helped the Panthers finish the comeback.
- UFL alumni: Five former United Football League players appeared on the two rosters, including Carolina linebacker Cam Gill, who recorded five tackles.
- Larry Fitzgerald and Arizona’s bench: Cardinals personnel wore red shirts featuring Fitzgerald’s No. 11 ahead of his Hall of Fame induction weekend.
There was also a prominent broadcasting debut. Former Pittsburgh Steelers coach Mike Tomlin appeared as an NBC analyst, offering a reminder that the Hall of Fame Game often functions as a stage for the league’s larger storylines as much as for the two teams on the field.
The job is not settled
The strongest interpretation of Beck’s debut is not that he has definitively overtaken Brissett. It is that he has made the contest real.
Arizona has several weeks to evaluate whether Beck can reproduce this performance against more sophisticated defensive looks and, eventually, players who will be on NFL fields when the regular season begins. A rookie’s first test is earning more chances; Beck clearly did that.
Brissett now has the opportunity to remind the Cardinals why veteran quarterbacks remain valuable when the offense becomes less scripted and the situations become more demanding. His experience gives him a floor that a young passer still has to prove he can match.
For now, the Cardinals have a better problem than they did before kickoff in Canton: a rookie who looked ready for a larger role and a veteran who cannot simply assume the conversation is over.
