Ukraine’s Strikes Inside Russia Have a New American Edge

Kyiv’s long-range drone campaign is no longer just about explosives. The bigger shift may be the surveillance, software and real-time tech feedback helping Ukraine choose what to hit.

Ukraine’s campaign to hit Russian military, energy and logistics targets far from the front is being shaped by more than explosive drones. Increasingly, the advantage starts before the strike, with eyes in the air and software helping operators decide where to send them.

At the center of the latest attention is the V-BAT, a long-range reconnaissance drone made by the American defense firm Shield AI, which CBS News reports has played a growing role in Ukraine’s strikes in and around Russia.

The target comes before the blast

The most important part of a drone strike may happen long before anything explodes. Ukraine needs to know whether a target is valuable, whether air defenses are nearby and whether the risk is worth the shot.

That is where reconnaissance systems like the V-BAT matter. According to CBS News, Ukrainian operators have used the aircraft to scan areas such as the Black Sea and help identify Russian personnel, equipment and military infrastructure.

In one early March episode described by CBS, a V-BAT spotted what appeared to be Russian soldiers and equipment on an oil rig near Ukraine’s southern coast. Ukraine’s navy then called in sea drones, and an aerial drone later struck a Russian Ka-27 helicopter that had landed nearby.

Ukraine’s navy said the operation destroyed a platform Russia had used for strikes into Ukrainian regions and cost Moscow more than $1.5 million in military equipment. The details are difficult to independently verify from the outside, but the episode shows the broader pattern: surveillance finds the opening, then strike drones move in.

Why the V-BAT matters

The V-BAT is not described as the weapon doing the killing. Its value is in endurance, range and the ability to send back useful intelligence without operators having to push too close to a target.

A Ukrainian naval operator using the call sign Negative told CBS News that the system lets teams confirm what is present, collect detailed imagery and provide intelligence from long range. That kind of confirmation is crucial when Ukraine is trying to prioritize expensive or hard-to-replace Russian assets.

The drone’s design also gives it practical battlefield advantages. V-BAT is known for vertical takeoff and landing, which can make it useful where runways are not available. In a war where launch sites are watched, jammed and attacked, flexibility is not a luxury.

CBS also reported that the aircraft uses onboard AI software to help program routes based on known Russian air-defense locations. That does not mean the drone is making strategic decisions on its own, but it does point to a larger shift: modern targeting is increasingly a blend of human judgment, persistent surveillance and software-assisted navigation.

Ukraine’s deeper strike campaign grows

Ukraine has been trying to push the war’s costs deeper into Russian-controlled territory and, increasingly, into Russia itself. The targets described in recent reporting include military sites, energy facilities, logistics networks and maritime assets tied to Russia’s war effort.

Ukrainian Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov said in June that Ukraine had nearly doubled its strikes more than 30 miles beyond Russia’s front lines, according to CBS News. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has also described a 40-day influence operation meant to pressure Moscow toward ending the war.

The Black Sea has become one of the most visible arenas for that strategy. CBS reported that Ukraine’s military struck nine oil tankers operating as part of Russia’s shadow fleet on Tuesday night. Russian officials also suspended gas sales to civilians in Crimea last month, the report said, after pressure on energy infrastructure around the peninsula.

Fedorov has said his drones will soon turn Crimea into an island, a blunt way of describing Kyiv’s goal: sever routes, restrict movement and make occupation more expensive for Russia to sustain.

Washington’s role is complicated

The American connection is politically sensitive because it sits between two realities. The V-BAT is American-made, but Ukraine’s long-range targeting campaign has also developed after changes in U.S. intelligence support.

CBS reported that in March 2025, the United States stopped providing certain forms of intelligence for Ukraine to strike inside Russia. That forced Kyiv to lean more heavily on other partners and on its own expanding drone-and-surveillance ecosystem.

French President Emmanuel Macron said in January that two-thirds of the intelligence Ukraine receives now comes from France, according to the same report. Ukrainian defense expert Taras Chmut told CBS earlier this year that European partners may be more technologically limited than the United States but can move faster in decision-making.

That context matters. The story is not a simple case of Washington directly guiding every Ukrainian strike. It is about a more diffuse battlefield network: American hardware, Ukrainian operators, European intelligence support, domestic Ukrainian drone innovation and private defense companies learning from combat conditions in real time.

A battlefield feedback loop

One of the most striking parts of the V-BAT story is how quickly wartime use can shape the technology itself. Shield AI employees in Ukraine told CBS that data and feedback from missions help improve both the aircraft and its software.

That includes adapting to Russian electronic warfare. A Ukrainian veteran and Shield AI field operator identified as Alex told CBS that when Russian jamming shifts to a particular frequency, operators report it, and the company can adjust.

This is the new defense-tech cycle at wartime speed. A system is deployed, jammed, modified and redeployed. Lessons that might take years in a peacetime procurement process can arrive in days or weeks on the Ukrainian battlefield.

There are risks and limits. CBS cited a Reuters investigation reporting that the V-BAT had crashed more than 50 times over the previous 18 months in flights around the world. That does not erase its value, but it underlines the reality that experimental or rapidly evolving systems can be fragile under pressure.

The stakes beyond one drone

For Ukraine, better reconnaissance can mean more efficient strikes and fewer wasted drones. It can also help identify Russian air defenses, including high-value systems such as the S-400, which Ukrainian officials say the V-BAT has helped locate.

For Russia, the trend is a warning that distance from the front no longer guarantees safety for military infrastructure. Oil facilities, ports, tankers, command posts and air-defense systems can all become part of a campaign designed to stretch Moscow’s defenses and drain resources.

For the United States and its allies, the issue is more delicate. Private American technology can shape the battlefield even when governments are trying to calibrate how much direct support to provide. That creates strategic benefits for Ukraine, but also political questions about escalation, oversight and accountability.

The clearest takeaway is that Ukraine’s long-range campaign is not just getting bigger. It is getting more connected. The drones that strike are only one layer; the deeper change is the intelligence network that finds the target, avoids the defenses and learns from every flight.
