Police say Ronald Williams Sr., 53, killed five members of his family before killing himself Tuesday at a home in Winfield, Kansas. The six people found dead included the mother of his four children and the four children themselves, according to the Winfield Police Department and the Kansas Bureau of Investigation.
The police-reported family murder-suicide has prompted a continuing investigation into what happened before officers reached the home near Ninth Avenue and Stewart Street. Authorities have not announced a motive, leaving major questions about a tragedy that unfolded over several hours.
A 911 call set response in motion
Authorities said Williams called 911 shortly before 9 a.m. Tuesday and told dispatchers that he had killed his family and intended to kill himself.
Winfield officers were sent to the residence in the 400 block of West Ninth Avenue at about 8:50 a.m., according to reporting by KSHB 41 Kansas City. When officers arrived, they heard a gunshot, retreated and established a perimeter, KSN reported.
Police did not immediately enter the house. Officers ultimately breached the front door shortly before 11 a.m. and found six people inside with gunshot wounds, authorities said. Emergency medical personnel pronounced all six dead at the scene.
The sequence is important because it explains why the response lasted hours. It also underscores the danger facing officers responding to a call involving an armed person inside a home.
The victims were a mother and children
Authorities identified the five victims as Kelly L. George, 44; Carol A. Williams, 9; Ronald H. Williams Jr., 7; Sarah K. Williams, 5; and Kelly M. Magee-Williams, 3.
The Kansas Bureau of Investigation said the adults and children lived together in the Winfield home. Police said Williams died from what they believe was a self-inflicted gunshot wound after killing the other five family members.
Because this is an active death investigation, the findings remain those of law enforcement at this stage. Investigators have not released additional details about the weapon, the precise timing of each death or whether anyone outside the home had warning of an immediate threat.
KBI and Winfield police lead inquiry
The KBI and Winfield Police Department are investigating the deaths. KBI Special Agent in Charge Jason Diaz said the agency had not determined a motive and that its crime-scene team was speaking with neighbors and people who knew Williams.
That work is likely to include reviewing the 911 call, reconstructing events at the house and examining any prior reports involving the family. Investigators often need time to verify a timeline and distinguish confirmed evidence from early accounts after a major crime scene response.
Winfield Police Chief Robbie DeLong said his department had received reports in the preceding weeks that Williams had confronted and yelled at people in public. DeLong said officers had had contact with him and described erratic behavior, but added that nothing had indicated the event that followed.
That distinction matters. Reports of troubling behavior can be part of an investigation’s broader context, but they do not by themselves establish a motive or explain why a person commits violence.
Questions remain about motive and warning signs
The case has brought together two difficult realities: a devastating loss for one family and a community’s effort to understand whether there were warning signs that could have changed the outcome. At present, authorities have not said what they believe motivated the killings.
There is a natural pull to make a direct connection between prior public behavior and an act of violence. Investigators, though, will need evidence rather than assumptions to reach any conclusion about intent, planning, family circumstances or possible contributing factors.
DeLong described the scene as unlike anything he could recall in more than two decades with the department. The KBI and Winfield police also said they were working to make mental-health resources available to personnel involved in the response.
That focus reflects the impact of such cases beyond the immediate victims: first responders, relatives, neighbors, classmates and school staff can all be affected by a sudden violent loss.
What investigators may clarify next
Further public updates could address the medical examiner’s findings, the evidence recovered at the house and a more complete account of the hours before the 911 call. Authorities may also clarify whether there had been prior calls for service involving the home or the family, if disclosure rules permit.
