The shooting cut through a Fourth of July gathering just blocks from one of New York’s best-known summer destinations. Police are still searching for the person who opened fire and investigating whether the attack is connected to earlier violence nearby.
A Fourth of July family cookout near the Coney Island boardwalk turned into a mass shooting scene when gunfire tore into a courtyard, wounding eight people, police said.
Four of those hurt were children, ages 6, 7, 12 and 14. One adult woman remained in critical condition, while the others were described by officials as stable or expected to survive, according to reports citing New York police officials.
A holiday gathering was targeted
The shooting happened Saturday night in the courtyard of an apartment building near the Coney Island beach, about a block from the boardwalk, according to the Associated Press, citing Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch.
Police said a family had gathered there for a cookout when a gunman approached and fired into the courtyard. The violence erupted not far from one of the city’s most recognizable summer corridors, an area packed on holiday weekends with beachgoers, boardwalk visitors and families.
The location adds to the public shock. Coney Island is not just a neighborhood; for many New Yorkers and tourists, it is a shorthand for summer, crowds, rides, food stands and the annual Nathan’s Famous hot dog eating contest, which had been held earlier during the holiday period.
But investigators are not treating this as random noise from a busy weekend. Police are searching for the person who fired, and officials have described a scene in which people gathered for a private family event were struck by bullets.
Four children were among the wounded
The children who were shot are 6, 7, 12 and 14, Tisch said, according to AP. Local reporting citing the NYPD said the 6-year-old was shot in the abdomen, while the older boys were struck in the leg or thigh.
A 21-year-old woman was in critical condition after being shot in the chest, police said. A 33-year-old man was also reported shot in the chest. The eight people wounded were taken to multiple area hospitals.
Police have not publicly released the names of the wounded. In cases involving children and active investigations, authorities often withhold identifying details, particularly when no arrest has been announced.

Officials have not confirmed a connection. That distinction is important: saying police are exploring a possible link is not the same as saying the cookout shooting was gang-related.
In an active case, early theories can shift as investigators collect evidence. A prior shooting nearby may be relevant, coincidental or only partially connected. Police will likely examine timing, location, weapons evidence, potential disputes and any known individuals tied to both incidents.
For residents, however, the distinction may feel less comforting in the immediate aftermath. A holiday weekend shooting involving children can make a single block feel unsafe even before investigators determine why it happened.
City leaders promised a response
New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani condemned the violence in a statement reported by WESH, saying, “There is no place for this kind of violence in our city. We will not tolerate it, and we will fight it with every single tool at our disposal.”
He added that the city mourned with those whose loved ones were hurt and called for building “a city where every celebration is safe and every holiday is joyful.”
Statements like that are familiar after shootings, but the test will be what happens next: whether police make an arrest, whether the recovered gun produces useful leads, and whether the city can reassure a neighborhood that has now seen multiple violent incidents in a short span.
The NYPD’s immediate challenge is narrower and more urgent. Investigators need to identify the person who fired into the courtyard and determine whether anyone else helped, planned or facilitated the attack.

As of the latest reports, police were still seeking the suspect. Authorities had released a broad description of a masked person dressed in black, but no arrest had been reported in the source material reviewed.
