Colin Nathaniel Scott, 23, died after he dipped his finger into a Yellowstone hot spring and accidentally fell into it on a Tuesday in 2016, according to Yellowstone National Park officials. Scott was killed in the Yellowstone National Park thermal area near Porkchop Geyser in Wyoming’s Norris Geyser Basin; officials later said his body had essentially dissolved and no remains could be safely recovered.

The account has resurfaced online under stark headlines, but the lasting lesson is less sensational than it is urgent for park visitors: Yellowstone’s hot springs are hazardous even when they look calm, colorful or shallow from a distance.

A fatal fall off the boardwalk

Park officials said Scott, a Portland, Oregon, man, and his sister left the designated boardwalk in the Norris Geyser Basin’s Back Basin area on Tuesday afternoon. The two had gone into the thermal area, where Scott reportedly tested the water with a finger before slipping and falling into a hot spring near Porkchop Geyser.

His sister witnessed the fall, reported it to authorities and was not physically injured, according to the park. Rangers confirmed Scott’s death that evening.

The initial recovery effort was complicated by the very conditions that made the incident so deadly. Yellowstone spokeswoman Charissa Reid said crews faced hazardous terrain and eventually ended the recovery operation because there was nothing that could safely be recovered.

News coverage at the time, including reporting by NBC News and CNN, described officials’ conclusion that Scott had essentially dissolved in the spring’s extreme conditions. That wording reflects the recovery finding, not a mystery surrounding whether the fall occurred.

The water is only one danger

Yellowstone’s thermal basins are powered by a volcanic heat source beneath the park. Their geysers, mud pots, fumaroles and hot springs make the region a major draw, but those same features create conditions visitors cannot reliably judge from the surface.

Many hot springs in the Norris Geyser Basin reach 199 degrees Fahrenheit or higher, according to Yellowstone’s published safety information. Water at that temperature can cause catastrophic burns almost immediately.

Heat was not the only risk in Scott’s case. Park officials explained that mineral deposits can form what looks like solid ground, while in some places the surface is only a thin crust over scalding water. A visitor may not know whether a patch of ground will hold weight until it breaks.

Some thermal waters also contain acidic chemicals. The combination of near-boiling temperatures, corrosive water and unstable earth makes these areas fundamentally different from an ordinary natural pool or stream.

Why Yellowstone requires boardwalks

Boardwalks and marked trails in Yellowstone’s geyser basins are not merely crowd-control measures or photo-taking platforms. They are engineered routes intended to keep people away from fragile ground and unpredictable thermal features.

After Scott’s death, then-Park Superintendent Dan Wenk offered condolences to the family and said the tragedy should remind visitors to follow regulations and remain on boardwalks. Yellowstone prohibits visitors from leaving designated trails in thermal areas.

The rule also protects the landscape itself. Foot traffic can damage delicate mineral formations and microbial mats that have developed over long periods. Yet the immediate concern for visitors is personal safety: a slight detour can place someone on ground that is neither cool nor stable.

It also risks reducing a death to an attention-grabbing detail. The better-supported account is straightforward: Scott fell after leaving a protected route in one of the park’s most dangerous geothermal settings, and conditions prevented a conventional recovery.

Norris Geyser Basin is especially active and changeable. Visitors should not interpret an absence of steam, crowds near a boardwalk or a striking blue pool as evidence that a feature is safe to approach.

Yellowstone’s broader thermal record

At the time of Scott’s death, park officials said it was the first thermal-feature death in the Norris Geyser Basin since 1898. They also said Yellowstone had recorded 22 known deaths related to thermal features since 1890.
